Melbourne School of Graduate Research Writing Centre for Scholars and Researchers

The Writing Centre for Scholars and Researchers

The Writing Centre for Scholars and Researchers works with publishers, editors and literary agents to support University of Melbourne postgraduate students and academic staff to communicate their research to a broad readership.

Publication support program

The writing centre can provide ongoing assistance to publish for a non-specialist audience through the publication support program. Through stages 1 & 2 of the program participants develop a publishing project in consultation with editors, agents and publishers. Stage 3, manuscript sponsorship, offers participants the chance to receive a mentorship, financial or editorial support to pursue their project. Applications for stage 2 close 10 October.

The centre has awarded 30 sponsorships since mid-2006.

Graduate certificate in commercialisation for research students

As part of the Graduate Certificate in Commercialisation for Research Students, the centre offers 950-803 From Academic Researcher to Entrepreneurial Writer. This subject aims to provide current PhD students with the skills necessary to translate research from the academy into writing for the general public in commercial applications.

Writers' festivals, literary events and online forums

The centre collaborates with departments to organise industry panels to discuss publishing avenues. The centre also organises on-campus lectures by visiting writers, writers' festivals, events and online forums.

Consultations

The centre also offers informal consultations on translating research into a book, (newspaper or popular magazine) article or website for a wider audience.
